    2. "Dad, we never asked for horses," Natan said. Daniel envied his brother's courage. He would always envy his brother's courage, just as his brother would always envy his will-power."Well, now you have them," their father said. "So you'd better take care of them. I don't have time for any more of your nonsense."He waited another couple of seconds, then turned and walked back to the house."Are they tame?" Daniel called without taking his eyes off the horses, just turning his head slightly to one si [...]

    3. 5 stars for the first two stories + 3 stars for the last one = a little more than 4 stars. They almost felt like parables but I'm not sure quite when or where I'd use them enjoyable nonetheless.

    4. Each of the three stories involves two males. In 'Boxing' it is two very different young fighters, in 'Horses' it is two very different brothers and in 'The Monkey' it is two different friends (they don't get a 'very'). The unifying theme is a universal one, growing up. Stylistically, rather than being compared to European writers, it is Americans, like Hemingway, Faulkner and Salinger, whose names crop up although it has to be conceded that Grossi has now taken his place in a long line of Tusca [...]

    6. This handsome little paperback by Pietro Grossi, winner of Italian literary prizes, contains two terrific stories and a dud. "Boxing" is a young writer's fantasy: a nerdy, artistic boy who is also, almost secretly, an exceptional pugilist. Grossi cleverly extends the conceit – the boxer's nickname is "Dancer" (or even "Ballerina"); his big fight is against a deaf-mute called "the Goat" – then executes a perfect ending. "Horses," the second story, is more austere. Grossi starts with the trope [...]

    7. Translated from the Italian by Howard Curtis, 'Fists' is a collection of three, male 'coming of age' stories. The person who recommended this book to me said that Grossi is known as the 'Italian Hemingway', with that gift for story telling and an economical and beautiful prose style. However, unlike Hemingway, Grossi's characters are more rounded and without the machismo found in Hemingway. While the first two stories are 'stronger' than the third, they are are all an effortless and wonderful re [...]

    8. pietro rossi is a master in storytellingeven though the second story "Horse" is somewhat "not upto standard" onebut the other two are class.ey narrates the lives of someone who is getting to know the hardships of adult lifenguage rossi uses for storytelling is exquisite!!first story "boxing" is spectacular!!

    10. Three stories about young men learning something about what it means to be a man and how to live.
