    1. I would never have heard of this book if Scarlett Johansson hadn't recently sued the author, but, having noticed an article in The Independent, I became curious. Why, exactly, had Ms Johansson become so angry? From the author's description, it didn't seem reasonable; but there are usually two sides to a story. Not, well aware of my fascination with censorship and celebrity gossip, kindly gave me a copy as a birthday present. I've just finished it.Well: if things had been different, and the story [...]

    4. We got the ARC of the English translation of this sent to us at our book shop. I predict that we will put five of them in our new fiction section come September and nobody will have any interest in it, save one misguided literary type who likes the idea of reading something French. And it won't even be a shame that the book looks like a fluffy chicklit book and therefore puts people off of even picking it up because essentially this is the epitome of lit-light and isn't worth wasting your time o [...]

    7. I'd been looking forward to reading this since I read 'The List of My Desires' last year and loved it. Well, this book is even better. It's a really sweet love story, but being French there is a sting in the tail (tale?). It also felt to me as though it was a novel about identity, as well as commentary on popular culture. I loved everything about it - the voice, the themes, the ideas, the cover Even the font. If this book was a cake, I would eat it. And to think Scarlett Johansson allegedly trie [...]

    9. Wow, I guess someone is obsessed with big boobs, Scarlett Johanssen and pop culture. Mildly humorous with a few glimpses of promise. Too few to my liking.

    11. I found the first three pages of The First Thing You See hard going, consisting as they do of a young man’s detailed descriptions of the different shapes of women’s breasts. As a straight woman I found them rather tedious and a touch creepy (the descriptions not the breasts) while at the same time a small voice in the back of my head was whispering, “Well, of course the author is French.” Our stylish neighbours across the Channel, with their contempt for the politically correct and their [...]

    13. Allegedly this was the book that Scarlett Johansson tried to ban. I can't really see why! Arthur Dreyfuss lives in a small town in France. One day he opens his front door to a damsel in distress who he believes to be Scarlett Johansson. Only it isn't, it is a lady who looks like her called Jeanine Foucamprez. They embark on a brief love affair, both characters with their own faults and quirks. The premise of this story sounded very good, I like quirky. Anything different, I don't mind. Whilst this [...]

    17. I suppose if you dig deep enough you will find a nice enough story but that's the problem; you shouldn't have to dig to find it. The book is bogged down with rambling waffle, countless film/actor references and so many quotes from authors and poets. For some reason the author found it necessary to constantly use the characters full names, as if the reader may forget who they were if he didn't remind them. I also found some parts repetitious, most notably; "Therese Dreyfuss, nee Lecardonnel" I fo [...]

    18. Meh. A sad follow-up to his debut novel. More references to the size of Scarlet Johansson's boobs and pop culture than any story eked out in their midst supposedly giving this mess meaning. Obviously written for the French best-seller lists, not much else. I will not waste more words on this trite waste of paper, whose author Scarlet Johansson tried to sue. Only after-the-fact interesting worth sharing!

    22. DNF - Yeah not reading this, he actually calls the character based from ScarJo, Scarlett Johansson at the start of the book. This is just fanfic that has been put in book form.I can understand why ScarJo was annoyed at the release of this book now.

    23. This slim little novel is like a piece of dark chocolate: both delicious and nutritious. I will admit that I picked up this novel after having read an article about how Scarlett Johansson had sued the author for "illicit use of her name, fame and image". I won't say much more about that since as a writer myself, I am admittedly biased in Gregoire Delacourt's favor. It is true that Jeanine, the object of our protagonist Arthur's affections, looks (to Arthur anyway) like Johansson. Tellingly thoug [...]

    24. 3.5 stars really.Love - the french way. Sadness, identity, longing. And poetry. Arthur Dreyfuss is just a guy (good-looking, yes, but still just a guy) with his potential uknown, his heart still unopened (as a bud in the spring) and longing, as his heart was hurt by the tragedy in his family in his past - the tragedy what has hurted him a lot more than he has realized. His sister had died and this had destroyed his family. But one day the unimaginable has had happened. The beauty of all beauties [...]

    26. My true rating is 3.5 I enjoyed this quirky, witty French novel. A welcome change! To read full review, please go to: thebooksmithblog.wordpress
